TYC grateful for help with Penguin Plunge

To the editor:

I wish to thank the Sakonnet Times for the excellent coverage of the Tiverton Yacht Club’s New Year’s Day swim. As you know this event raised over $1,000 for the new Tiverton Library. We were pleased with the turnout and also wish to express our appreciation to Coastal Roasters for donating hot chocolate on the beach and to the Little Bear Restaurant for donating a hot lunch for the participants.

We also appreciate that both the Tiverton Fire Department and the harbormaster were on hand to assure the event’s safety. It was a great event for a worthy cause.

I’d also like to express the TYC’s thanks to your paper for your support during the past years. Most recently, your New Year’s editorial wish for our reconstruction in the coming year is appreciated. We have the required permits from the state’s Departments of Environmental Management and Coastal Resources Management and hopefully we’ll have a building permit soon.

The club, as you have often reported, has for many years tried to be a good citizen to the Town of Tiverton. In addition to providing access to the water, swimming and sailing lessons to the community we have during the past year donated to local charities, hosted a blood drive, supported Girl Scout activities, and most recently donated to the  library as beneficiary of our swim.

While the town’s loss in court of their attempt to re-zone various properties (including our own) to allow a yacht club to exist as a matter of right, was a blow to us, we want you and your readers to know that our efforts to re-build will continue. We are determined to replace our clubhouse with a facility that all (make that most) of the town will be proud of.
