TIVERTON — A 48-year-old man was helicoptered to Rhode Island Hospital after his 1980s-vintage Corvette flipped over on Bridle Way off Stafford Road in the northeast part of Tiverton last Friday.
Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Lloyd said the rescue of the victim, who was pinned beneath his overturned vehicle, took about 40 minutes.
The incident occurred about 1:45 p.m. when the vehicle landed on its roof in a swampy area along the road. Chief Lloyd said it was a single-car accident.
A heavy duty wrecker was brought in from Tiverton Auto Body to lift the vehicle straight up, in order to allow rescuers to clamber underneath to reach the victim. Gasoline was leaking from the vehicle’s tank, said Chief Lloyd.
Fall River fire and rescue personnel assisted, he said, providing a portable platform that was inserted under the vehicle, creating a sold base from which rescuers were able to reach the driver.
Because of the length of time the driver was trapped, a Med-Evac helicopter was summoned. Once extracted, the victim was transported to Tiverton Middle School where he was placed aboard the helicopter and flown to the hospital.
Chief Lloyd said the victim appeared to have sustained “severe injuries,” but could provide no further information, including his identity. His current condition is unknown.
