Rules also revised for alcohol, tobacco

PORTSMOUTH — In addition to dealing with skirt lengths, the school committee also approved revisions to its rules covering alcohol, drug and tobacco use .

Now entitle “Zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs,” the rewritten rule includes revisions to wording describing the use of breathalyzers at school.

The previous version stated in part that “School personnel shall perform said testing.”

Now, the rules say, in part, “With the assistance of the police, the district supports the use of mechanical devices, such as breathalyzer machines or other devices” to detect student use of alcohol or drugs “while on school property, school transportation, or whil e engaged in school activities. “

Rules governing use of tobacco were also changed significantly with new emphasis on products in addition to cigarettes.

“Smoking tobacco and/or possession of smoking materials (including cigarettes, cigars or tobacco in any other form, including smokeless tobacco, which is any loose, cut, shredded, ground, powdered, compressed or leaf tobacco) or smokeless tobacco related products, by students is not permitted on school buses, in school buildings or on school grounds at any time.

“ ...disciplinary measures may include issuance of a Police citation, personal counseling, withholding of privileges, or suspension. In all cases, the parent(s)/guardian(s) will be advised and their cooperation will be sought.

“Given reasonable grounds for suspicion, school officials may search for and seize tobacco products brought onto buses or school property.”
