To the editor:
The Tiverton Land Trust would like to thank Mr. Joubert for his complimentary comments regarding the Pardon Gray Preserve in his February 9, 2012 letters to the editor section. I would also like to clarify other comments about the Pardon Gray Preserve. When he states that this preserve was “bought with tax dollars,” it could easily be assumed by Tiverton residents who are not knowledgeable about this purchase that Tiverton residents’ property tax dollars paid for this acquisition.
To be clear, the purchase was made possible through the following funders: a Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management open space grant (whose monies were made available through passage of a statewide bond specifically for the preservation and protection of open space); private foundations and generous donations from Tiverton residents and friends of land conservation. The Tiverton Land Trust used no local tax dollars to buy this property, and we use no local tax dollars to maintain it for the public to visit and enjoy. The Pardon Gray Preserve is privately owned by the TLT and as such, the TLT is solely responsible for its management.
TLT’s mission is to protect Tiverton’ farms, forests and open spaces and to provide educational opportunities for all our town residents and neighbors which will enhance and foster an appreciation and love for the natural beauty that makes Tiverton unique. Our all-volunteer board of directors is committed to TLT’s mission and works diligently to serve and increase its membership; without such support – volunteerism and financial — we could not perform valuable community work.
