What: “Once Upon a Time” Cabaret Where: Portsmouth High School, 120 Education Lane, Portsmouth (enter door 17) When: 7 p.m. How much $5 advance (pick up in front office) or $7 that night Details: The PHS music department presents this cabaret featuring a variety of songs performed by soloists and choral ensembles. Proceeds benefit the PHS Music Boosters. Coffee, hot chocolate, and gourmet desserts will be served at no additional charge.

What: PHS Band trip spaghetti dinner Where: VFW Hall, 822 Anthony Road, Portsmouth When: 1 to 4 p.m. How much $8.50 adults, $6.50 children 5-12, free 4 and under Details: The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 5390 Portsmouth will hold a spaghetti dinner. All proceeds will be used to send PHS band students to the Cherry Blossom Festival this spring in Washington, D.C.
What: Patriots Plunge Where: Sandy Point Beach, Sandy Point Beach Road, Portsmouth When: 2 p.m. How much Donations Details: Join the Portsmouth Middle School community in a dash into the water to help raise money for the Portsmouth Middle School Athletic Booster Club, which provides funding for boys and girls soccer, baseball, and softball.
What: Valentine tea Where: Brownell House, the Commons, Little Compton When: 2 p.m. How much $12 Details: The Little Compton Village Improvement Society is holding a tea to benefit the historic Brownell House. Scones with clotted cream and jam, tea sandwiches, desserts, and pots of flavored tea will be served with a surprise favor for each participant. Call Penny at 401-635-2642 for reservations.
What: Lecture on the Dorr Rebellion Where: Middletown Public Library (community room), 700 West Main Road, Middletown When:2 p.m. How much Voluntary $5 per person or $7 per family Details: The Middletown Historical Society welcomes scholar Russell DeSimone, who will speak on Rhode Island’s Dorr Rebellion, the most significant political upheaval to occur in Jacksonian America.
What: Art History Lecture Where: Portsmouth Arts Guild Center for the Arts, 2679 East Main Road, Portsmouth When: 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. How much: $5 for PAG members, $10 non-members Details: The last of a three-lecture series, “The Birth of the Modern,” which examines the explosion of changes starting from the 1887 World Fair and the following period during the two world wars and their effects on art produced in the 20th century. The lecturer is editor and former gallery director Catherine Moran. Light refreshments provided.
What: Mardi Gras at St. Mary’s Where: St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth When: 4 to 6:30 p.m. How much $10 adults, $5 children, or a maximum of $25 for families Details: The youth of St. Mary’s will host a Mardi Gras party to benefit the youth pilgrimage in 2013 and other youth activities. There will be prizes awarded for best costumes, Cajun food (ziti and salad for the faint of heart), karaoke, live music, and a silent auction.
What: Introduction to Modern Square Dancing Where: Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Center, 110 Bristol Ferry Road (Route 114), Portsmouth When: 6 to 8 p.m. How much Free Details: The Town Howlers Square Dance Club of Portsmouth offers this introduction, open to all ages and skill levels. Square dancing taught in an informal and fun atmosphere by Jim Schell, a nationally recognized caller. Couples, teens, singles, and families are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
