Bronze boat parts rescued from scrapyard

PORTSMOUTH — Police have charged a North Providence man with stealing over $20,000 worth of gear from a boat company and selling it for its scrap metal value of $342.

Nicholas D. Martinez, 19, of North Providence, is accused of taking bronze boat struts valued at $20,000, custom bronze bolts worth $810, and brass marine bearings worth $967 from McMillen Yachts at Alden Landing, Portsmouth. The alleged thefts happened on Jan. 24 and the arrest was made on Feb. 1.

The struts had been removed from a 1950s motor yacht that is being restored and the bolts had been specially made to reattach those struts.

Police say the company was alerted by the operator of the Pawtucket scrapyard that had paid Mr. Martinez $342 for the items and which had video tape showing the transaction.

The items were recovered before they were melted down.
