TIVERTON — Just nine months after it kicked off its capital campaign, the Tiverton Library Foundation announced Friday that it has netted $1,525,000 in pledges from private donors.

In making the announcement, Foundation Chairman Phil Schuyler said the group has a goal of $2.5 million that it intends to raise to defray the construction costs for the new town library.

“Many said that our goal was too ambitious in these tough economic times,” Mr. Schuyler said, “but we were convinced that there would be strong support for a new library in Tiverton. The numbers speak for themselves. We have now surpassed the 60 percent mark and we fully anticipate reaching or surpassing our $2.5 million goal.”

The library is more than just a building, he said. He attributed the group’s fund-raising success to this realization. “It’s been our central message,” he said. Major gifts from Tiverton residents and businesses have been secured over the last nine months, he said.

“This campaign is not about a new building,” said Dr. Anthony Cincotta, chairman of the campaign leadership committee. “It’s about transforming library services in Tiverton into a vital town resource. The new library will serve as an engine for economic growth, a center for life-long education, a modern meeting facility for Town organizations and businesses, a free global video conferencing center that will connect local businesses with new markets and students with their peers around the world. We see it as a new milestone for Tiverton, and when we have presented this case to prospective donors, they have obviously agreed.”

Dr. Cincotta is president and chief science officer of VeroScience LLC, a Tiverton-based biotechnology company that focuses on the development of therapies and products to improve human health.

The Tiverton Library Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that says its mission is to secure contributions to help support the operational and capital needs of the Tiverton Public Library.

Tiverton faces sharp tax increases in the next few years with aid to cities and Towns being cut . Tiverton's forty seven million dollar unfunded pension liability will bring taxes up to the cap with additional payments in the millions. Now is not the time to incur more debt.
