Three Sakonnet Schooners Pop Warner cheerleading teams will be competing for a berth in the national competition when they vie in the New England Regionals Saturday, Nov. 19, at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.

The Sakonnet Midget Division, Jr. Midget Division and Jr. Pee Wee Division squads each fared well at the Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts Association (RISMA) state championship at the Providence Career and Technical Center and again Nov. 6 at the New England Regional Qualifiers. It is the first time all three Schooners’ cheerleading groups have advanced to the regionals.

The Midget Division squad was first at both competitions, the Jr. Pee Wees were runners-up at both and the Jr. Midgets were second in the state event and fourth at the regional qualifiers.

If any of the local squads finish first or second at New England Regionals, they have a chance to compete in the nationals at Disney World in Orlando, FL Dec. 9. It would mark the first time a Sakonnet Schooner cheerleading team made it to nationals.

Should that happen the Schooners will be fundraising and seeking help via corporate sponsorship. Anyone wishing to help in any way should contact Sherri Conklin or Curtis Mello at 508/977-7908 or e-mail sakonnetschooners@gmail.com.
